Welcome to our latest recruit: SQ

Introducing the newest addition to our ever-expanding team of exceptional engineers, SQ, who brings to Waddle the expertise he has developed working with a wide variety of clients these last 4 years at technology consultancy, Thoughtworks. A part-time chef, photographer and karaoke king outside of work, SQ is settling into the Waddle house nicely, equally excited by the challenge his new role presents and the food choices on offer in and around the Chippendale area.

A big welcome to the team! How has life in the Waddle house been so far? It's cosy and everyone is very welcoming, which makes collaboration pretty easy. There's lot of great food places around too!

Who is SQ? Do you have any hobbies? Secret talents?

Born in Malaysia, raised in Singapore and then migrated to Australia when I was 18. I belong to the Pan (潘) clan, which can be traced back to the Zhou Dynasty. I almost pursued a Chemical Engineering degree, which would've been a very different alternate reality! In my spare time I'm a cook and a photographer. I also love a good karaoke session.

Tell us a bit about what brings you to Waddle. What were you doing before you got here?

I'd been a consultant at ThoughtWorks for the past 4 years, moving between clients and experiencing different ways of working. Some of the interesting problems I've tackled include debugging connectivity issues behind the Chinese firewall and bridging the gap in communications among distributed teams. Over time, I grew more interested in the challenge of scaling out a product past its initial stage, both from a technical and operations perspective. Waddle presents that opportunity and I'm very excited to be on that journey.

What is your first impression of Waddle? The platform? The team?

"Do what makes sense" is built into the culture here and I love it. It's easy to progress with delivering value to customers as well as improving the quality of life for the Waddle team. It took a while for me to adjust as I've been conditioned to much more resistance!

What are you hoping to achieve here with us?

I'm hoping to help improve the experience for both our customers and the team at Waddle; anything that will help increase productivity. I'm also excited to jump on and help out with finding solutions to challenging problems that will inevitably arise.
